Interwar Plots,
Eighty Years On

Sidcup is overwhelmingly a product of the 1920s and 30s. Street after street of semi-detached houses on long, narrow rear plots, laid out with privet, laurel or hawthorn boundaries and a lawn running the length of the garden.

Those original boundaries are the thing. Eighty years on they are well beyond the size anyone intended, frequently shared with two neighbours, and often the single biggest maintenance burden on the plot. Getting them back under control without killing them takes knowing what each species will tolerate.

Most of Sidcup sits on London Clay, with lighter ground on the higher parts toward Lamorbey. Clay lawns here compact under foot traffic, hold water through winter, and then set hard in a dry August unless they are aerated properly.

What Sidcup Gardens
Actually Need

Every area has its own soil, aspect and housing stock, and Sidcup is no exception. Here is what shapes the work we do locally.

01

Overgrown boundary hedging

Original privet, laurel and hawthorn now at full height. Reduction and reshaping judged by species, so the hedge comes back rather than leaving a permanent bare face.

02

Long, narrow rear gardens

The classic Sidcup plot rewards structure. Dividing the length into sections gives a garden that feels considered rather than a corridor with a shed at the end.

03

London Clay lawns

Compacted, waterlogged in winter, baked hard in summer. Hollow tine aeration and scarification do more for these lawns than any amount of extra cutting.
